“Japanese Anemones in the Irish Countryside” Print by Irish Artist/Photographer James A. Truett.

These Japanese Anemones (also called Windflowers) were blooming through a wood fence on the trail to a waterfall in County Clare.

Despite the name, they originated in China and were adopted and cultivated by the Japanese centuries ago. So how did they end up growing wild in the Irish countryside?

Wealthy estate owners brought home specimens from their travels to show off in their gardens... as estates languished, seeds 'escaped' the gardens and started taking up residence in any suitable environment.

They flower in Ireland from July to October.
