These colourful hanging flower baskets brighten the main street through the County Clare village of Clarecastle near Ennis. What a pleasant sight, especially on an overcast and dull day.
As its name implies, the village along the River Fergus has a castle, built originally in 1250 to protect early settlers of the neighbouring areas of Bunratty, Clonroad and Limerick. The castle was named "Clare" long before the county took its name when it was established in 1579.
Once a busy port for transporting goods to and from Ennis, Clarecastle's quay now is used mostly for fishing and recreation.
Clarecastle now essentially is a bedroom community for people working in Ennis and Shannon.
