Cragbrien House near Ennis in County Clare has seen better days through many years of Irish History since it was built in the 18th Century.
The walls are thick and sturdy, but while the interior floors and ceilings are rotting, many stately architectural features survive. One can only imagine the lavish parties and daily life experiences that took place in this home over the centuries.
Cragbrien House was the seat of the Stacpoole family in 1786. It was held by the Kelly family in 1870 according to property records and subsequently became the home of the Markham family.
The most notable figure to stay in this house was Éamon de Valera, a central figure in the 1916 Easter rising and the War of Independence, ultimately serving several terms as Ireland's Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and finally as Ireland's President from 1959 to 1973.
