Built in the 15th Century as an O'Brien stronghold, the castle has played host to a number of historic figures including Irish rebel Hugh "Red" O'Donnell and was home for a time to the infamous Maire Rua O'Brien (Red Mary) during her youth.
Situated on a picturesque five acres near the village of Kilshanny, Ballynagowan Castle survived Cromwell's attacks and occupation in the mid-1600s and was last inhabited up to the mid-19th Century by a parade of British generals and aristocrats.
Recently restored and renamed Smithstown Castle, the property is available for vacation rental.
