Like many palatial estates in Ireland, Dromoland Castle's ownership has taken many twists and turns since the original tower house was built around 1014 in Newmarket-On-Fergus, County Clare.
After much litigation and political intrigue, the O'Brien Clan ultimately took over in the mid-16th Century, inhabiting the castle until it was sold in 1962 at a time when large estates struggled for economic survival.
